Scuba Diving Lessons have several required items you have to complete. There is quite a bit of classroom material. There there are a set of skills you have to learn – done in a pool typically. Finally you have to able to demonstrate the skills in an open water environment like a lake, quarry, ocean etc.

So for learning, if the store convenient for you to go to, has their own Scuba Diving Training Pool makes thing very convenient to cover the first two items I mentioned above. You need to ask them how they do the Open Water portion of the course. This may require some travel, may be a hotel cost, equipment rental cost which may be over and above the Scuba Certification Cost.

A fun way to do this is if you and your family have plans to travel to a warm water destination in the Caribbean, or the Florida keys, etc. Then do the classroom and pool training in Houston, and finish the Open Water Portion when you travel. The Scuba Store should be able to give this information as to how they do the referral.

Scuba Certification are from Organizations like PADI, NAUI, SSI, etc. They are all compatible. Pick the Store you go to based on I have mentioned above. See if you like them. Then Go for It. I love Scuba Diving.

The only Coral Reef Destination I know of people access from Houston area (I have never been to) is the Floral Gardens in the Gulf of Mexico. From Galveston you can go on a weekend trip there. I am not sure if they do Open Water Dive training there. Ask you will find out.
