Supercross Motorcycle Racing 101

Author: Ollie Donovan

Have you heard of supercross motorcycle racing before? Supercross motorcycle racing is a sport that is popular in America. However, despite that popularity, there are still many individuals who have no idea what supercross is. If you are one of those individuals, you are urged to learn about this sport. It is so fun, exciting, and action packed that there is a good chance that you will be a supercross motorcycle fan, in no time at all.

If you enjoy watching professional racing, especially NASCAR, there is a good chance that you will also enjoy supercross motorcycle racing. This is because, like most other forms of racing, supercross is an action packed, competitive sport. If you are watching a supercross race, whether that race is live or televised, you will likely be on the edge of your seat.  Â

Although supercross was earlier compared to NASCAR, you will find that the two actually have little in common, besides the fact that they are both popular and both are focused on racing. While NASCAR uses traditional race cars, also sometimes referred to as sports cars, supercross uses motorcycles. What is unique about these motorcycles is that they are not the ones that you regularly see on the highway; they are off-road bikes made especially for off-road racing. Â

In addition to using off-road motorcycles, supercross varies from a number of other forms of racing, especially when it comes to the racing surface. Like many other forms of racing, including asphalt racing or traditional dirt track racing, you will find that supercross racing events take place on man-made tracks. These man-made tracks are often indoors. The tracks will vary, depending on the type of supercross race, but most tracks have numerous obstacles, which include jumps. The goal of supercross is to maneuver your motorcycle throughout the track to finish first.

As previously mentioned, the type of man-made track will all depend on the type of supercross race being run. Supercross is a professional racing sport, but it is not just limited to professional racing. Men, women, and children from all across the United States have started taking part in this fun and exciting sport. Those riders are often referred to as amateur supercross racers. Amateur supercross racers may race at a local track. In fact, many local individuals and business owners have come together to sponsor local supercross drivers, as well as provide funding for the tracks. Although these events may not be considered professional, they are rapidly increasing in popularity. In fact, they are so popular that you may even have a local supercross or motocross track in or around your neighborhood.

In addition to local supercross tracks, there are many individuals who have made their own. Although most professional supercross racing tracks are indoor tracks, most amateurs have or use ones that are outdoors. A large number of want-to-be professional riders have made the decision to develop a track in their own backyard or in nearby fields. However, the only downside to doing this is that racers are often on their own. In the event that an accident occurs, it may be more difficult to obtain help, when compared to racing at professional tracks and sanctioned events.

Now that you know what supercross motorcycle racing is, you may either want to become a fan or a racer. Whichever you wish to be, there is a good chance that you will be enjoying the sport of supercross motorcycle racing for years to come.

Mascot Review: College Edition

Author: Marcus Robbins

Alright folks. There's a lot of bad ass, and not so bad ass mascots out there. What I'm going to do here is give you some ratings on 5 college mascots. Lets get right into it!

Artie the Fighting Artichoke
Scottsdale Community College

Artichokes, while not very intimidating, are healthy. So the real delima here is, what's more important? Having an intimidating mascot? Or encouraging a healthy diet? I'd say eating healthy. No one is intimidated by mascot, except maybe babies, and babies are creepy and gross. The main problem with this mascot is that he seems to be on steroids, there's no other way to explain a muscular artichoke. Furthermore, how did he grow arms and legs? He also seems to be mentally unstable, possibly even totally insane. His right cleat is untied as well, which just isn't safe. He could trip and break is neck. On the whole, this is an okay mascot because he promotes eating healthly food and he can be used as a face for the mentally insane (just don't leave him alone with the kids!).

Rating: 3.4 out of 5

Banana Slugs
University of California, Santa Cruz

Look at this this. It bad ass. First of all, it's a slug reading Plato, and Plato is cool. Don't even bother trying to debate this slug, because it will own you. He read Plato for fun, because he's sweet as hell. Along with being a genius, you can see this guy in the movie Pulp Fiction. Yeah, that's right, John Travolta wears a UCSC shirt in one scene. Ok, lets do a bad ass check list. Reading Plato? Check. Immortalized in one of the coolest movies ever? Check. What does that add up to? One B.A.M.F.

Rating: 25 out of 5

University of Arkansas at Monticello
Boll Weevils

I have no idea what this thing is. Wikipedia says it's some kind of beetle. That could be totally wrong, I have no clue. All I know is that it's hilarious, yet slightly creepy. The hilariousness outweighs the creepiness in this case though. Could you imagine seeing this thing on the sidelines during a game? I would be so psyched, but I also might be cracking up so hard that I would die. His shoes aren't quite cool enough though and that's holding him back from total greatness. Lucky for him though, he could totally kick any other mascot's ass any day of the week, so that more than cancels out the shoes.

Rating: 4.9 out of 5 (Being too hilarious for his own good is what holds this one back from a perfect score)

Rudy Flyer
University of Dayton

I already know this guy knows how to pump up a crowd. Look at him, Dayton must have the most insane crowds you've ever seen when this guy is getting them psyched. I don't have any stats, but I'm sure at least 44 people have died as a direct result of Rudy Flyer getting the crowd too excited. He wears moon boots too. MOON BOOTS! No one wears moon boots, because no one is hardcore enough to wear them, expect for Rudy Flyer, who most certainly is cool enough to wear moon boots. My only problem: where is his plane? He's a FLYER. Could you imagine if this guy flew in on a plane? The building would fall apart because the crowd would to so loud. Rudy Flyer has probably slept with well over 5,000 women, and he never called any of them back. Why? Because this guy is cold as ice.

Rating: 16 out of 5

Big Red
Western Kentucky

The date rapist of mascots. Big Red is the creepiest thing I've ever seen, bar none. I really don't even know what to say other than that. Big Red probably loves anime, the really weird anime. Henti also.

Rating: -8 out of 5

The Science Behind Different Kinds of Scuba Flippers

Author: Joshua Conway

Scuba flippers are one of the most important things a diver must have. Fins help divers glide through the water. Without the help of scuba flippers, pushing through the water below would be much more difficult. The effort of moving forward would cause the divers to use up a lot of air. This would significantly shorten their stay underwater, making their dive less enjoyable. This is the reason why choosing the right pair of fins is important. Getting a pair of scuba flippers that lessens the effort needed to cover a certain distance will definitely prolong a diver's stay underwater. Knowing how they work will definitely help a person pick the right pair of fins for a dive.

How Paddle Fins Work

Paddle fins are the most commonly used scuba flippers. This is the most conventional type of flippers available in the market. With each kick, these scuba flippers move the water upward and downward just like a paddlewheel steamship. This can be very helpful to divers who are fighting through currents. Although the mechanics of paddle fins are fairly efficient, some improvements in their structure can lessen the drag that may cause a person to exert more effort when diving. The cause of this drag is the accumulation of the water on top of the paddle fins.

A Slight Modification to Minimize Effort

In order to make it easier for divers to move underwater, the original design of scuba fins have been modified to cancel out the sources of this drag. Some paddle fins now have angles that would allow divers to have a stronger kick at a certain position. This will also cause the water to slide down instead of accumulating on top of the fins. The downside of using these fins is that a person may have to exert some effort during the part of a stroke when the fins are in a certain position.

A New Breed of Scuba Flippers

Through the years, a number of well-known companies have manufactured scuba flippers that have been modified to lessen the drag. Most of the fins available today have splits, cut outs and vents that can improve their efficiency underwater. The split fins, for example, have a vertical split in the middle. Because of their structure, these fins can cut through the water like a propeller that creates a lift and forward propulsion. Instead of accumulating on top of the fin, the water goes through the opening between the blades, reducing the drag. This allows the diver to cover a certain distance with lesser strokes.

Some fins have horizontal splits or cut outs which allow them to push the water back. They also have well-placed vents that ensure that the water does not accumulate on top of the flippers.

Proper Care of Scuba Flippers

The efficiency of scuba flippers is maintained by proper care. As proven by the science involved in the design of scuba flippers, a change in the structure can decrease their efficiency. For this reason, they should not be stored vertically because this will cause them to become bent. Also, when packing these fins, one should make sure that they are lying flat on a surface.

How to Conserve Air Under Water

Author: Ollie Donovan

Man has a natural inclination towards being one with his surroundings. Everything is interconnected and each person feels the need to be able to feel every medium that intertwines between the complexities of his being. This is the reason why so many people are going crazy about scuba diving.

Scuba diving has attracted the attention of many enthusiasts all over the globe. It seems to be a very fulfilling and enjoyable activity. Some people have made careers out of their passion for scuba diving. The world has sensationalized scuba diving in such a way that it has helped preserve the environment and greatly contributed to the awareness regarding the environmental issues that are associated with our aquatic resources.

One of the major and popular issues that are continuously being discussed in the scuba diving arena is the conservation of air under water. An emerging scuba apparatus design is called a rebreather, which can help people address the concern about rapid air consumption. The apparatus functions in such a way that the exhaled air by the diver is stripped of carbon dioxide and is re-circulated to the air chamber. This way, one can enjoy the deep seas much longer. However, in most cases, divers don't have such an apparatus.

Having insufficient air under water poses grave risks for the diver. One of the major causes of brain damage from scuba diving activities is the prolonged lack of oxygen that flows into the brain. Our brains rely on oxygen to deliver the necessary nutrients for it to function and if a diver doesn't know how to properly manage his air, he is exposing himself to the risk of running out of breathable air.

So, what are some of the ways by which a scuba diver can conserve air while diving? One of the most controversial suggestions regarding the issue is to hold one's breath during dives to be able to conserve air. In real life, one shouldn't make breathe holding as a diving habit. A simple analogy for holding one's breath is it is like killing the chicken to be able to get the eggs. It's really a matter of priority. Do you want to conserve air from your tank while risking yourself to the negative effects of carbon dioxide saturation? The build up of carbon in the brain is dangerous because it pollutes the blood stream and deprives all the parts of the body from the much needed gas that is oxygen.

However, holding one's breath has some useful applications. It can be used to be able to control one's buoyancy under water. It is usually used by professionals to ascend a maximum of one foot, but nothing more than that. One should also remember that it is a "no-no" to hold one's breath while ascending rapidly.

A more accepted way of conserving one's air under water is to practice slow breathing. When you inhale and exhale, you should do it in a way that you fully go through the process. Breathing completely and slowly is the way to go if you really want to conserve water under water. It makes the whole process of respiration more efficient and effective as compared to taking short inhales and making short exhales.

Another tip (which is related to the one given above) is that it is more advisable to make big kicks as compared to making tiny ones. The concept behind this is that it is a more efficient way to move under water, therefore, you conserve your energy and less oxygen is needed by your body.

Sometimes, divers usually do all the things that are mentioned above and they still find themselves consuming too much air. For all the air hogs out there, the problem might not be under water. Being physically fit is very important in scuba diving. A diver who smokes would most definitely consume much more air much rapidly than a diver who is in good physical condition. Looking at the issue of air conservation under water from a more holistic point of view is perhaps the best tip that one can imbibe.
