3 Scuba Safety Tips

Author: JoshuaG

Scuba Diving is a wonderful activity and a great way to experience the beauty of underwater worlds. But one has to be careful when diving. Otherwise your fun adventure could quickly turn into an underwater nightmare.
Here are three great tips every diver should know to keep safe and have fun.

1) Don't Drink and Dive
Everyone wants to have a fun time on their vacation or trip. For some people that means the inclusion of alcohol. But if you are going to scuba, it is very important that you limit your alcohol consumption. The less aware you are underwater, the greater danger you get into. Also drinking leads to dehydration those pesky hangovers!. So when scuba diving remain well hydrated. Be sure to drink plenty of bottled water, get sufficient rest, and hold off on drinking alcohol until your diving day is done.

2) Optimize Your Dive Gear
Anyone who has ever done a cave dive has probably learned the importance of streamlining, and tightening up your dive gear. Dangling hoses, straps, or other items that might entangle you pose a serious threat to your safety. There are many things underwater to get caught on such as seaweed, a shipwreck, coral, or even the dive boat as you are getting into the water.

3)Monitor Your Air Supply
Nothing is more important to your safety then your air supply. To ascend slowly, you must have air in your tank. Watching your air supply and consumption frequently is important for the duration of the dive. If you are down to 1,000 p.s.i., you should be well aware of the proximity of your dive boat or the beach. After 500 p.s.i. you should be in the process of making a slow, controlled ascent back to surface. I know it sounds dumb but please watch your gauges constantly throughout your dive and never, ever run out of air!

There is much more to scuba diving safety, but remember these tips the next time you are in the water, after all better safe then sorry!

The Best But Used Scuba Equipment

Author: Peter Hansson

The phrase 'best but used scuba equipment' might sound like an irony, but believe it or not, such is entirely possible. However hard finding the best but used scuba equipment might be, it is still something that is feasible, given your combined efforts and time. What you need to understand about scuba diving is that it can be so expensive. But why should you curtail your love for the sport just because of lack of money? Fortunately, you can get to experience your favorite sport with, at the same time, the best scuba equipment. The best part with having the best scuba equipment, also, is that it comes for a very cheap price. Indeed, all these you can have - only if you know when, where and how to look.

Why should I buy used scuba equipment?

The first step in scuba diving is having the scuba equipment you need to have in order to plunge yourself into the sea. Of course, you don't necessarily have to own your own scuba equipment in order to scuba dive. An option you have is to rent out in a scuba diving store, which, more often than not, also offers free tutorial services. There's nothing wrong with this. However, if you are already halfway toward being an amateur scuba diver, then you might have no need for a tutor in scuba diving. And if you are, really, an amateur scuba diver, then you must have already realized how much the scuba diving store is earning for your scuba equipment rental. Compute the total money you have paid them for renting their scuba equipment, and to your realization, you might find out that the money you have spent can well be spent already on used scuba equipment!

Early on, you have to realize just how far you are willing to go for scuba diving. This will determine your decision of whether or not to buy used scuba equipment. If you have rented scuba equipment one time too many but are not planning to be a hardcore scuba diver, then you should just as well buy used equipment. This will save you the money in the long run.

Is there such a thing as best but used scuba equipment?

Buying used scuba equipment is one thing, but buying the best but used scuba equipment is an entirely different thing. You ought to understand, however, that both are entirely possible, though in varying concentrations. Used scuba equipment can be found everywhere - from your nearest beach to even your next door scuba diving fanatic neighbor. The question, however, is this - what are the chances that the used scuba equipments that they're selling are fantastic and has no hidden defects?

The preceding question might have only increased your fear in buying used scuba equipment, but be totally unafraid. If you look hard enough, you can find the best but used scuba equipment deals around the corner. Yes, there is such a thing as best but used scuba equipment. These can be determined by the length of time used and the quality of the actual equipment. You, yourself, can determine this through your senses.

What used scuba equipment should I purchase?

But not all used scuba equipment should be purchased. For one, buying a used swimsuit or mask is close to unacceptable. However shortly used the scuba mask and suit is, if it is used and had been worn and torn even for just a short period of time, then don't even reconsider. You might put your own life in danger in the end.

Do Scuba Divers Need to Carry a Scuba Dive Knife When Underwater?

Author: Kathy Dowsett

Carrying a scuba dive knife looks impressive, but is a knife a necessary item of on all scuba equipment scuba dives? A knife can provide a sense of physical security, but in most scuba dives it is probably an irrelevant item of scuba equipment.

Fishing Line and Carrying a Scuba Dive Knife

AÂ scubadive knife could be handy when diving on a site covered with old fishing line and the scuba dive plan is to recover some of the lost sinkers for making into scuba dive weights. Prising the sinkers and fishing line out of the nooks and crannies of the underwater seascape with a scuba dive knife may be a good justification for carrying the knife.

Reasons to Carry a Scuba Dive Knife

Some other reasons for a scuba diver to carry a knife could be:

* Diving in heavy seaweed, such as kelp
* Search and recovery type dives where ropes and the possibility of getting tangled may be present
* Drift dives where there could be the possibility of getting tangled in the rope dragging the scuba dive flag
* Equipment failure may lead to problems underwater where a knife may need to be used to cut-away equipment. Maybe the weight belt buckle can't be opened due to damage; or a similar problem.
* It could be useful for dive masters or scuba instructors to carry a knife in case students may need some assistance with equipment.

A Scuba Dive Knife and the Marine Environment

One of the reasons for many scuba divers to carry a knife is to pillage the ocean. Carving off oysters, coaxing crayfish out of a crevice or opening anemones to feed the fish are all uses for a knife.

Using a knife for this type of activity should be discouraged. Interaction in this manner by scuba divers with the marine environment is not good. It not only kills off the life, but also decimates the environment for future divers.

The image of a rugged scuba diver battling a ferocious, teeth filled shark is something that should be left to the realms of fiction. Not only would it be near impossible for a scuba diver to kill a shark with a scuba dive knife, it would be extremely dangerous with a wounded shark flapping around.

Communicating With a Scuba Dive Knife

It may sound a bit strange to communicate underwater with a scuba dive knife, but it is possible. The knife can be used to gain a dive buddy's attention. Banging a knife on a steel or aluminum tank is one of the best ways to get the attention of another diver.

A simple message previously developed with the scuba dive buddy could be used. It would even be possible to tap out Morse code on the tank!

There are specific reasons for a scuba diver to carry a knife. However, a knife should really only be carried if warranted by the expected diving conditions.
