Want A Digital Camera That Is Waterproof and Shockproof?

Author: Carole Rowland

The Olympus Stylus 1030 SW Camera has been touted as the toughest point-and-shoot camera in the world. This incredibly waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof, crushproof, and dustproof model out performs all the previous Olympus SW series' digital cameras. It produces even more amazing images (still or action photos) and is more durable under the most rigorous of conditions. Take a look at a the top 10 features of the Olympus Stylus 1030 SW:

1 - Waterproof up to 33-ft.- You can take this camera with you scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, fishing, or even just out in the rain. Whatever your favorite water activity is, this camera can go with you. And with its waterproof seals and gaskets you can take incredible photos and videos actually underwater to a depth of 33-ft.

2 - Shockproof up to 6.6-ft. and Crushproof up to 220-lbs.- Have you ever lost a camera by dropping it on the ground or on the deck of a boat? You no longer have to worry about that with this camera. You can drop this Olympus Stylus 1030 SW over and over again from up to 6.6-ft. and it can also withstand up to 220-lbs. of crushing pressure. Even under these rigorous conditions it just keeps on taking photos.

3 - Freezeproof down to 14F - Most point-and-shoot cameras will freeze up in frosty weather. Not the Olympus Stylus 1030 SW. This camera still performs when the temperature dips well below freezing (14 degrees Fahrenheit-10 degrees Celsius), so it is ready to ski those slopes, snowboard or even ice fishing, whatever your cold weather favorite is.

4 - Dust and Dirt Proof - The rugged Stylus 1030 SW is an ideal companion for an expedition in the Sahara, or take it to the beach. With its airtight construction it is impervious to dust, dirt and other particles. And when the camera gets dirty, just rinse it off with water.

5 - Digital Image Stabilization - This feature allows you to take perfect photos of fast moving subjects. So take it with you to your favorite sporting event or birdwatching.

6 - 10-megapixel - The 10MP image sensor captures enough detail for photo-quality up to 18 x 24-inch prints.

7 - 3.6x optical wide-angle zoom The 3.6x wide-angel optical zoom allows even more of your subject to make it into each shot -- perfect for underwater photography. The lens does not protrude from its body, so it is further protected from harsh conditions.

8 - Face Detection - Face Detection tracks the face within the frame and automatically focuses and optimizes exposure for sharp, brilliant portrait pictures.

9 - In-camera panorama - The Olympus 1030SW camera panorama mode captures three images and stitches them together to create one amazing panoramic picture. 10- 2.7-inch HyperCrystal II LCD This camera is perfect for people with an active lifestyle. Whatever your choice of sports or activities are, no matter what climate you may be in, you will not be disappointed with this camera.

The Olympus Stylus 1030SW was designed with your lifestyle in mind! It is designed for active people who want a tough camera that can keep up with their on-the-go lifestyles. Need more information on the Olympus Stylus 1030SW, check out this site:

does anybody have the Pentax Optio 6.0MP Digital Camera (waterproof)?
I’m thinking about buying this camera tomorrow and want to make sure it is ok, anybody have it? What are the underwater pictures like? I do a lot of snorkelling and hope it does a good job.

Hi, I looked at the product on the Pentax web page to know how deep you cold dive with this camera, as I bought a PENTAX Optio S50 with an underwater case, last year. Unfortunately, the case costs the same as the camera itself, but it looks as if it is worth the investment. Only thing, the camera models change so often, so S50 is outdated already, but for me, it takes good pictures and will continue to do so as long as I want.

Now then, your 6.0MP is rated as follows:

With a JIS Class 8 rating, Optio waterproof cameras are encased in a rust-resistant exterior with rubber sealants and lens protection that repels dust, dirt, moisture and opens a new world of photography up to five feet underwater for up to 30 minutes. Add a fast .6 second start up, a quick .05 second shutter release, and a movie mode. Your wait is over for durable, action-ready digital.

Do you free dive? If you ever intend to go deeper than 5 feet, you better forget about.

      Let me know. Peter

What is the best waterproof digital camera on the market?
Must be $200-$400 and have video. I am going to the Virgin Islands in 2 weeks and will be doing a lot of snorkeling. I want a camera that is good for regular use but will hold up to extended exposure to water.

Advice on fairly cheap underwater digital camera?
I am going on holiday soon and will probably doing a lot of snorkeling, maybe some diving as well, definitely going shark diving for a start. Any way, since I tend to take a lot of pictures and don’t really want to come after a few minutes to change the film of my film camera (very simple reusable underwater one), I was thinking of maybe getting a cheap underwater digital one.
Doesn’t have to be fancy as long as it takes decent pictures in fairly good conditions, it doesn’t even have to be waterproof beyond snorkeling depth as I will get a better camera once I have the opportunity to dive more often. This would only be a temporary solution so I don’t want it to be overly expensive, preferably under £100.
It would be nice if it had a video function and the batteries last relatively long ( I generally use Energizer ultimate lithium for small digi cams).
I have looked at several cameras but would like to hear some more opinions or experiences:

If anyone could give me some sample pictures or video clips taken with the camera of your recommendation, that would also be supremely helpful! Thanks!
So in your experience, disposable film ones are better? Maybe I have just been unlucky but the ones I’ve had haven’t been very good. I did find some pictures by the Vivitar ViviCam 6200W which look alright:

Are there any specific brands of disposable you would recommend? I do have a reusable one but I’m probably going to take more than 36 pictures in one go so would need back up, lol…

Where would you recommend for cheap casings? The ones I’ve seen are quite as expensive as some of these cheap cameras!!

Those things are toys at best, and you would not be happy with the quality.
Perhaps you should consider buying disposable waterproof film cameras – they would give you much better quality (and I am VERY much in favor of digital, but in this case…..).
Underwater photography is expensive, and if you don’t have much of a budget, you are VERY limited.

      Edited to add:
I am not saying that disposable cameras are all that good, but compared to the results you would get from a very cheap digital one, they ARE better (and remember we’re talking about waterproof stuff here).
As you found out yourself – cases etc are expensive, and you are unwilling or unable to spend more money. So I’m afraid you’re stuck with lower quality, no matter what you do.

There is good gear out there, but wow……. it costs!

What is a good underwater camera for under $175?
I am looking for a good waterproof digital camera 9+ mega pixels that is fairly durable and can go at least 10ft down. I want to use it to go snorkeling and other miscellaneous underwater activities. Also I do like to customize my pictures a little bit.

    Thank You for your help!

Both a friend of mine and I have Olympus… Hers is a bit different than mine but mine is the Stylus 1030W and I couldn’t be happier with it!!! Its Waterproof up to 33ft. Shockproof, Freeze proof and 10.1MP but i think Olympus came out with one thats a little better and more expensive… I have has mine for over a year and have dropped it mannnnnnyyyy times and its a champ!

I know in that line they have a bunch of different models… Mine is also metal and very durable and i just love it!!! My friends is not metal and pink and she has had hers for like 2 1/2 years and still loves it!!!

I can’t remember how much it was i think around 175 but i know if you get it on ebay it will be cheaper with a bunch of extras and can get a warrenty (I did). And you can customize a bit to (back&white, Shopia, Frames, Red eye, Crop, label etc…)

Is the Sony TX1 Digital Waterproof Camera safe in salt water at snorkeling depth?

    • Anonymous says:

LOL your camera is not waterproof…. actually the TX5 model is waterproff, the TX1 is a normal camera and putting it any wet environment will damage it.
